A tool for discovering networks and services.
Fing is a network scanner with two main features, those being the detection of TCP services running on a network system and general network scanning.
The program runs as a command-line application and provides you with a variety of details after answer a series of questions. It supports ping, traceroute, domain lookup and can Wake-On-LAN.
In all, Fing is a program which doesn't really offer that much in terms of flexibility but does provide an easy interface to a few common networking tools and works fine as a network scanner. Unfortunately, Fing is a program which lacks a graphical user interface making it only useful for those who have a grasp of how to actually use CMD.
Features of Fing
- Domain Lookup: translate a domain name like google.com into IP address and vice versa.
- Ping: measure the round-trip time for packets sent by Fing to a destination host.
- Traceroute: identify the hops, i.e. hosts crossed to reach the destination.
- Wake On LAN: wake up devices that may be switched on from the network.
Compatibility and License
Fing is provided under a freeware license on Windows from network software with no restrictions on usage. Download and installation of this PC software is free and 2.2 is the latest version last time we checked.
What version of Windows can Fing run on?
Fing can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the OS shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8 and Windows 7 having been tested. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads.
Other operating systems: The latest Fing version from 2024 is also available for Android and iPhone. These are often available from the app store.
